More About Bowen
The Bowen technique is a complementary therapy first used in the 1950s. A Bowen practitioner uses their fingers and thumbs to make small, rolling movements on precise points of the body. It gently targets the muscles and fascia in the entire body and encourages a response from the body to rebalance itself. It is a relaxing, subtle modality that is suitable for people of all ages from newborn to the very elderly with restricted mobility. It is also safe for pregnant women.Â
This is because it isn’t so much the manipulation itself that’s considered to effective, but the individual connection between body and brain. By drawing attention to an area, and then pausing any stimulus in the area, the brain is forced to re-engage and kickstart the healing process. Although Bowen is a hands-on therapy, there is no manipulation or force involved with the treatment, with the client lying on the massage table or seated. If desired, the client can remain fully clothed as these moves can be performed through loose, light clothing. Â
Initial appointments will last from 1-1.5hours and additional treatments 45-60minutes. To gain the most benefit from Bowen, it is advisable to have a minimum of 3 treatments with a week between each treatment.
