About Bowen Therapy

Essential for the whole family

Bowen Therapy ‘moves’ stimulate the proprioceptors in muscles and other connective tissue in the body's circuitry system, initiating a brain response which, in turn, sends nervous system messages back to the fascia to normalise the rest rate of tissue to a more balance and operable function.

Bowen affects the fascia (basically connective tissue) within your body. Fascia is found throughout your body, surrounding every muscle, every fibre within the muscle. It sometimes occurs as large flat sheets with many layers. Once Bowen work has been implemented, the fascia draws on the fluid in the body to become rehydrated & functional again-layers of well-hydrated fascia glide smoothly over one another & easily stretch, allowing changes to occur.

As the tension level becomes normalised, fluid movements of the lymphatics and blood are increased in the area, which enhances tissue repair around injury sites. Bowen Therapy stimulates the body to begin its own healing. A number of things can alter this healing (or re-balancing) response, if intervention occurs-things such as extreme heat or cold, massage, or other forms of body work.

What to expect during a Bowen Treatment

During a treatment, the client will either lie on a massage table or sit in a chair , depending on the comfort needs of the client. Most of the Bowen moves can be administered through light/loose fitting clothing, although working directly on the skin is best.

A feature of the work is that, between sets/sequences of moves, the therapist may leave the room for a couple of minutes to allow the body time to process and integrate the rebalancing changes.

Most clients feel a deep sense of relaxation-sometimes at restful levels they have never experienced before. Others feel the energetic changes occurring in the body, better circulation felt through warmth or tingling, and other forms of reconnecting sensations. Feeling tired or deeply restful is also not uncommon once the treatment is over.

After a Bowen treatment

People generally notice an instant improvement, with the relief of pain and a freer moving body. They often feel incredibly relaxed, sometimes very sleepy and tired after the treatment, whereas others may experience sensations of heat/cold, tingling, a feeling of lightness. They may feel and look taller, stand somewhat straighter and be more open through the chest. Others may feel a little achey for a couple of days, signaling the body is re-tensioning, re-aligning & ridding itself of toxins-it will not last for long. Drinking plenty of water in the days following your treatment will re-hydrate & help flush out these toxins.

It is important to note that Bowen moves can continue to work for several days after the treatment and your body will continue to respond.
